Youth Migration Free Essays

string(88) " families into the Western labor market society has become smoother faster\." Our world is a big global village. With the opening up of the world economy resulting in free movement of youth, both within their countries across the nations for better education , better jobs , better quality of life ,migration, both internal and international ,has emerged as a burning issue. Migration is a multi-dimensional,transnational,multicultural issue. We will write a custom essay sample on Youth Migration or any similar topic only for you Order Now It is acomplex problem. It is not a simple demographic or economic problem; there are socio-psycological,cultural,ethnic,legal issues involved. The issue of migration needs to be examined in a holistic manner. In today’s world, knowledge is power and Information is the key to success. In most third world developing nations, the youth is rural and semi-urban areas are confronted with poor educational Infrastructure. In Indian context, there are broadly three types of schools- (i) schools having teachers and children but no buildings or insufficient classrooms,(ii) schools having buildings and students, but no teachers ,(iii) schools having buildings and teachers ,but no students because of non-availability of quality teachers , educational tools equipments. The colleges in these areas are no better. Next is lack of quality technical vocational education, lack of qualified science teachers, scientific tools, equipments and other educational infrastructure. Lack of quality educational infrastructure in rural semi-urban areas in most Third world Developing nations focus the mere ambitious modern rural youth to migrate to schools colleges in cities metropolis. More than 75% of rural population is dependent on agriculture, but ironically agriculture is neither remunerative nor sustainable. For example, 75% of land in rural India is owned by 5% of landlords, big farmers absentee landlords. Shoddy land reforms fragmentation of land leading to uneconomic size of land holidays ,lack of modernization commercialization of agriculture, further marginalization of marginal farmers have forced modern youth to move to urban areas for better education ,better employment opportunities better quality of life. The factors that drive migration of youth from rural to urban areas at the micro-level are more or less the same that determine migrant motives at he International level . Better education, better employment opportunities, better vertical and horizontal mobility in job situations, more lucrative pay packets , better quality of life and increasing aspirations of the youth in a liberal free economic world are the migrant motives . The number of young students from Third World countries Developing economies like India China in American Western Universities has quadrupled ove r the last two decades. For some a foreign degree is a status symbol; but for the majority of students from poor Third world countries developing economies it is the quest for knowledge better job prospects that drive them to migrate to American and Western Universities Colleges . Developing economies like China , Japan , India, Brazil motivate their students, even at times with state sponsorships scholarships , to study in Western Universities for acquiring better knowledge with access to modern technologies. Income maximization, social mobility social status, yearning for better qualities of life propels this youth to join schools of Higher Learning. With economic civilizational gaps between countries narrowing down day by day, the culture shock appears minimal non-existent. Peer group influences also act as a motivating factor. Youth migration, both within the country and at international level, is a modern day reality not to be looked down with suspicion or anxiety. World economies have opened up; nations nationalities have become more liberal tolerant; people to people contact, industry to industry contact besides Government to Government contact has become more democratic participative. A sort of give and take operates between the rich and powerful nations the developing Third world countries. International trade commerce, technology development particularly after the recent economic meltdown has made world economies more interdependent. No one nation can solve the problems facing the world. A new world has emerged where the Rich and poor nations need each other. In such scenario, International migration, both in the sending country as well as in the receiving country, has affected one all. It has thrown open new challenges opportunities for the Governments for communities nationalities. The migrant youth, while migrating to an alien land, no more suffers for cultural shock; he slowly gets integrated in the alien land, becomes part of its society, its culture its economy. He contributes to the development process in the receiving country; he, in return, receives a better pay packet leads a better quality of life. Next are, of course, occasional racial discriminations race related crimes; but they are of negligible proportions. There are however attendant problems like social and family dislocations in the sending country, greater pressure on the urban infrastructure in the receiving country. Next are occasional hue cry in Developed economies regarding their jobs being cornered by youth from developing nations, thus contributing to increasing unemployment resultant social tensions. At the domestic level, migration from rural to urban areas has put enormous pressure on urban civic amenities like housing, health, education, drinking water, sanitation etc. The brain drain from rural to urban areas has left the villages bereft of the best hands. There is a growing hiatus between Urban India and Rural India the same is the case with all developing and third world countries. At the International level, free movement of youth for education employment has meant that young immigrants make up an important and increasing share of the labor force in the receiving countries, particularly in the Developed economies. Instead of stealing they have significantly contributed to this growth in employment in these economies. With the relative absolute size of the working population in the west getting smaller, the youth from countries like India have filled up the void. Net change in the working age population in the countries has a direct bearing on the net youth migration levels. In the western economies, there is a net shortage of labor in particular jobs like ICT, Health, Sciences, Construction transport, hotels, cleaning domestic sector. This has helped inflow of labor force from Developing Third world countries. It also has meant that cultural and social integration of immigrants their families into the Western labor market society has become smoother faster. You read "Youth Migration" in category "Papers" Adaptability levels in the host nations has increased manifold. So far as sending countries are concerned, brain drain is the biggest challenge. But migrant remittances have grown manifold which has helped the emigrant youth to improve the quality of life of their family members communities back home. International migration is a complex complicated issue- a multidimensional one. The economic meltdown in the Developed economies, the war in Afghanistan, Iraq, a terrorism ridden Pakistan, the turmoil in the Arab world have made international migration, both legal and illegal, a burning issue. For more than 214 million international immigrants life has been uncertain, often treacherous. It has thrown open the debate of shared prosperity shared responsibilities- it is both a challenge as well as an opportunity for various stakeholders to carve out a balanced mutually agreeable paradigm that will maximize the developmental benefits of migration for both the sending receiving countries. Migration benefits all the stakeholders when it is legal, open, just and orderly. Young migrants, both skilled unskilled labor, have helped in reducing imbalances in International labor market. Young migrants from the Third world Developing countries like China, India, Brazil bring with them hard work, creativity, cheap labor, entreprenuerial ability, dependence loyalty. Modern day youth are constantly on the move- they help promote exchange of ideas, values, expertise knowledge. There are about 214 million international migrants out of which 128 million live in Developed countries of which 58% have their origin in developing countries. With the economic meltdown, there has been a net decline of young migrants from developing countries. The worst hit sectors like finance, construction, manufacturing infrastructure in the Developed countries have negatively impacted the flow of young migrants to the Developed countries. In spite of this, there is demand for highly skilled young workers, entrepreneurs, unskilled semi-skilled labor in sectors like health, ICT construction. These sectors remain to be fulfilled by migrants from Developing countries. But because of the economic crisis slow industrial recovery in the west, unemployment among youth is rising, particularly among the children of immigrants. This leads to farther marginalization amongst 2nd 3rd generation immigrants leading to social tension, racial conflicts alienation. There has been some panic knee-jerk reactions of Governments in the Developed countries who have tried to reduce migration by reducing quotas, adopting more stringent labor market tests, not renewing work permits, forcing private state sector players to adopt a more pro-native recruitment policy reducing the size of the labor market. So far as their countries of origin is concerned, international migrants, particularly the young skilled, semi-skilled unskilled labor, have helped improve the living standards of their family members left behind by way of remittances. The nearly 316 billion dollars the immigrants sent home in 2009 not only helped improve the standard of living of the families, but contributed to the increase in foreign exchange reserves in these countries thus adding to their economic resilience in a bad economic year. The countries of origin have included international migration as a key focus area in this scheme of development, often by joining up with major stakeholders in drawing up plans and programs that benefit the migrants, their families, the community at a large. Some countries of origin have developed innovative ways of involving the expatriate communities by facilitating transfer of collective remittances or by issuing ‘diaspora bonds’ to revise capital from these sources. As an initiate, the countries of origin have undertaken proactive policies strategies of helping these expatriate communities by facilitating support for labor migration, improve protection in foreign soil, facilitating transfer of remittances safe return of migrants. Multilateral agencies like Inter-American Development Bank International Fund for Agricultural Development have been seized of the issues of reduction of remittance transfer costs. Some donor countries agencies have taken initiative in engaging supporting expartites in their home countries by way of providing free expertise, services advice for development of countries of origin. International migration of youth bring in its wake myriad opportunities challenges at the migrant’s level, at the family and community level. Better pay packets for the youth ensures better standard of life for migrants, their families their home country. In states like Kerala Andhra Pradesh in India, most of the families have a young qualified and skilled hand serving abroad, as engineers, doctors, nurses, science teachers, construction workers, skilled, semiskilled unskilled. In the last two decades, most of the families the community in general have prospered economically socially of the foreign remittances their son or daughter sends home. The Gujarati youth carry with them entrepreneurial abilities expertise world order carved out a niche of their own in the field of business industry. There is upward mobility, both economic social, not only for these young migrants, but their families, kith kin the communities left behind in their home countries. The economic possibility of the people of Kerala, A. P. , Gujarat Punjab can, to a large extent, be attributed to the youth migration in these states to greener better pastures in the West Third World countries the fat remittances they send home. While international migration, mostly economic, has had boosted the economy of the migrant, their families, their communities the nation as a whole, the socio-psychological cultural effects of such migration deserve attention. It is particularly relevant in Indian context, when joint family system still remains dominant. The departure of a young family member staying serving at thousands of miles away passes serious psychological problems for aged, family members, young brothers sisters and the peer groups at large. It creates a psychological vacuum and raises serious problems of adaptability. There is a major problem in the lack of social support system or programmes both for the young migrants as well as their family members left behind. There is an urgency in addressing the issue of understanding how youth migration impacts parental needs family needs. The old feel neglected the young feel uncared for. The community feels betrayed. The society, over a period of time, forgets the young migrant who in their eyes has ceased to belong to them, at least socially psychologically. Due to lack of constant support, old parents other members of the family left behind by the young children became a socially psychologically vulnerable group with high risk of psychological behavioral disorders, including alienation feeling of isolation depression. While the benefits if International migration to individual migrants, their families, communities the nationalities are visible apparent, the visible invisible cost is an urgent area of concern. While international remittances have helped improve the quality of life of millions back home, sustained poor economics, improved the balance of payment situation contributed to foreign exchange reserves, the hidden cost visible cost can no longer be swept under the carpet. The socio-psychological impact on family members left behind, the flight of intellectual capital from developing to developed countries, issues of migrant integration, exploitation of cheap labor, lack of a policy of Inclusive development of migration pose serious challenges for our political business leaders policy planners. Protection of migrants, cases of racial abuses human rights violations call for a multidimensional approach to various aspects of International migration, particularly its linkages with development, Inclusive growth, human rights natural justice. With knowledge holding the key in a globalized economy, international migration of youth for better education better pay packet is going to be on the rise. In the Third world developing economies it has developed into a permanent integral structural part of the body politic economy. Lack of opportunities, disparity amongst economies within economies, divergent demographic dynamics, internal upheavals in home countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan Arab world have acted as a ‘push factor’ for international migration. Labor market imbalances, availability of cheap labor, both skilled unskilled from Asia-pacific countries, economic dependence inter-linkages amongst nations, rich poor and growing aspirations of the people I these countries have propelled migration of youth across boundaries. There has also been flow of expert labor from the Developed to developing countries, at times necessitated by transfer of technology, collaboration joint ventures projects or as strings attached to an economic or technological aid package. Both in the receiving sending countries, there is a growing realization amongst policy makers and think tanks that international migration development are interdependent interlinked. Since international migration is multidimensional, multicultural, multidisciplinary in character, we need to address the challenges in a more humane, understanding co-operative atmosphere. It requires integration cooperation at the local, regional transnational levels amongst governments, societies communities. There is a growing feeling that we can address the negative impacts of international migration maximize benefits to both the sending receiving countries by involving a collaboration well coordinated framework within the V. N. system. Such a framework should be well supported by Governments in both countries of origin countries of destination, backed by civil society. That way it can transcend cultural boundaries take into account factors like cultural accommodation integration, human rights, natural justice fair play. Countries in Asia Pacific region account for nearly 30%of world’s 200 million international migrants, majority of them youths, both as sending and receiving countries. Young talented, skilled youth from India, China, Phillipines etc. make their destination to US, Canada, Australia Europe for higher quality education as well as meeting the growing technological, semi-technological needs in these countries. Beside the labor market needs, family reunification account for major chunk of international migration. Besides transnational migration, inter-regional intra-regional migration is on the rise. You will find a large number of young engineers, doctors, construction workers, health workers from India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia Phillipines making their way to Gulf nations Australia. This fills up the labor gaps corrects labor imbalances in the region. The Gulf countries countries in South East Asia have emerged as temporary hub of labor migration from South Asia. Feminization of International migration is a discernible feature in the last decade or so. Large no. of young female workers, particularly in the health, ICT, infrastructure services domestic sector from countries of India, China, Sri Lanka, Pakistan Bangladesh make their way to the Developed countries for attractive economic packages then fill the gap in the labor market. There is a big outflow of temporary contract labor from Asia, particularly South Asia South- East Asia for labor intensive 3D jobs (dirty, dangerous difficult) , particularly in sectors like construction, agriculture, manufacturing cleaning services. Women construct laborers who got engaged in domestic sectors or in cleaning services construction activities often are lowly paid also explicated at the hands of middlemen service providers. There is a large number of illegal migrants who make their way to the Gulf countries. It is difficult to know the exact no. of such laborers since a sizable chunk do not register with national authorities. Besides, large no. of illegal migrants make their way because of porous geographic boundaries. For example, every year lakhs of Bangladeshis illegally enter India for better economic opportunities through the porous boundary. Similarly, there is free outflow of migrants within amongst the countries of erstwhile USSR. Because of the limited role played by Governments, these temporary migrants conduct labor get exploited at the hands of private recruitment agencies, particularly in the countries of South Asia. Labor trafficking, particularly construct laborers women laborers by private recruiting agencies using the means of deception is rampant in the Asia-Pacific region. The lack of a clear policy by the Governments in the region, rampant corruption by authorities and a pathetic attitude of authorities have altered the private players a field day in exploiting the young migrants, particularly women. The poor economic status of young men women makes them a vulnerable group. They get financially, physically sexually exploited at the hands of private players. In the name of migration, young women migrants, particularly from South Asia South East Asia get lured by the private players to the Gulf countries exploited, used abused in the process. These helpless young women are victims of sexual exploitation, forced marriages domestic slavery in the rich Gulf nations. In the name of Contract labor, there are a large number of repulsed cases of women being forced into prostitution or used as keeps in the Gulf countries. Since Islamic society does not provide them much protection, young women, particularly from South Asia S. E. Asia, are often lured into forced marriages or land up in brothels in Gulf countries. Brain drain brain gain are a major area of concern in international migration. In the past, brain drain from poor but talented countries like India, China, Pakistan South East Asia was a major area of concern because flight of talented skilled human capital from these countries affected national productivity technological innovation hit key sections like health, education, research development technology. But with the emerging economies of India, China, Brazil, South Africa oil rich Arab countries embanking on a path of 9% to 10% growth rate with emphasis on individual production, infrastructure, better education health care, a reverse brain drain is taking place. In some sectors, brain gain has really happened. Some of these governments have adopted a dual strategy of retention return. By offering dual citizenship sops for setting up industries liberalizing terms conditions of investment providing tax breaks, these countries have succeeded in mobilizing the rich migrants to either return or invest in profitable ventures or in the share market in their home countries. Countries like India have created a new department in Government for overseas Indians which addresses their concerns problems, both abroad at home. The Annual NRI meet organized by Government of India meeting specific communities like Gujaratis by Gujarat state Government is aimed at attracting involving the rich NRIs in profitable ventures at home. Some Governments have adopted a policy strategy of mobilizing the diaspora which helps in transfer of knowledge, skills, technology capital that makes up for flight of human capital from the home country. The key areas of action requires simplification of procedures for remittances so that illegal transfers are avoided. The understanding of the implications of gender dimensions of international migration, the concerns needs of the families of migrants left behind at home, preparing the second third generation migrants to take up the new challenges so that they don’t find isolated or disillusioned, taking care of the health educational eeds of the migrants their family members ensuring smooth integration of the emigrants in the country of destination are issues of urgent concern. The basic civil rights of the migrants needs to be looked into by the Governments civil society. The key areas of action co-operation for broadening the opportunities of young migrants requires their psychological, social economic integration in the process of development both in the receiving sending country. In order to fully understand utilize the potentials benefits of international migration, both the countries of origin destination need to evolve suitable migration management policies taking care of welfare of migrants their integration into the socio-economic agenda, poverty amelioration strategy in the sending countries, racial social integration in the receiving countries. National regional developmental goals should be reflected in the migration policies. There must also be policy coherence at the national, regional international levels. The civil legal rights of the migrants must be ensured at all costs. The Governments, in both sending receiving countries, must put in place mechanisms to eradicate human trafficking, regulate modus operendii of private recruitment agency, eliminate flesh trade in cases of young women migrants. Last but not the least, the national governments civil society, cutting across geographical boundaries, must work in an atmosphere of trust understanding so that international migration caters to the development needs maintain labor imbalances, thus contributing to the development of young migrants, their countries of origin countries of destination. Hannah Hock and Dadaism free essay sample

They used the aesthetic weapons of collage and photomontage as an anti-artistic means of shocking the public and thus as a way of deconstructing a situation considered absurd. Hannah Hoch and her fellow Berlin Dadaists spoke of their works as â€Å"photo-montages† in part because they liked the anti-fine art connotation the term montage derived from the German term, meaning â€Å"to engineer. (Boswell, 129) Although little vestige of such anti-aestheticism clings to our present apprehension of photomontage, the term still defines the medium: Photo, of course, naming it’s materials and montage, as engineering, specifying the dual process of actual, physical procedure and compositional organization or style. (Boswell, 129) Hannah Hoch’s â€Å"Cut with the Kitchen Knife† which is her major work, this photomontage unites representatives of the former empire, the military and the new, moderate government of the Republic in the â€Å"anti-Dada†. These male figures are paired with photographic fragments of active, energetic women-dancers, athletes and actresses-who animate the work both formally and conceptually. That is this photomontage critiqued currently received notions of art and its purported mission. Composed solely of photographs and photographic reproductions that Hoch had cut from widely accessible mass-media periodicals, the work was remarkably self-effacing in style- a testament to Dada’s impatience with Expressionist affirmation of individuality and subjectivity. It shared the International Dada Fair’s underlying theme of anti-militarism, too, for it spoofed well-known male politicians and military figures by endowing them with the body parts of women and animals. Even the riotous tone of Hoch’s densely packed composition echoed the carnivalesque atmosphere of the Dada Fair as a whole. Indeed, Cut with the Kitchen Knife telescoped the methods and meanings of the First International Dada Fair into a single, iconic image. â€Å"Cut with the Kitchen Knife† demonstrates her extraordinary ability to balance many elements in a natural composition, besides being a very early example of a female artist expressing her belief in the power of women. Hannah Hoch was an active artist from 1915 through the early 1970s;yet, at her death in 1978,  she developed her own unique style, which gained a wider audience and appreciation right up to her death in the 1970s. Hoch was still best known as the only women associated with the stridently macho group that was berlin Dada. Hannah Hoch believed that â€Å" photomontage could be used not merely to produce things heavy with political meaning, but that one could also regard it as a means of self-expression and eventually arrive at purely aesthetic works.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Generic And Brand Name Drugs Essay

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Generic And Brand Name Drugs Essay Advantages And Disadvantages Of Generic And Brand Name Drugs – Essay Example Generic and Brand Drugs Generic and Brand Drugs A drug that is brand d is one whose medication is marketedby a certain pharmaceutical industry. A brand is an asset, which links certain products to relevant customers. (Agress, 1996).The drug contains two names at the starting point. The generic name is the scientific names of the drug while the brand name is what the companies assign for the purposes of marketing. Generics are after the patent, which may last for a period of twenty years. Brand building is a costly process and requires a long-term supporting system. It would also create real value in the eyes of industry partners, and perceived value in the eyes of product users. In addition, it also creates intellectual property (trademarks) that can increase the value of the product to partners performing together in a commerce business and the PDP is controlled of how the different kind of product is cost and are utilized. Increasingly, generic OTC and consumer healthcare products given carry with them the reputation of the vendor. PDP-developed products have social values. There are several costs involved in branding, which are usually incurred by the consumer or transferred to the donor. It would require long-term support, and donors will not be willing to sustain support. Market share is difficult to be increased since a strong meaning is not established for our brands. (Aker, 1991)There is need to â€Å"support both the generic and the commercial forms of products on the marketplace since our goal is greater health not greater market share† (Aaker, 1997). Budgets that are less forgiving usually call for tactics of high standards. There is need to develop a simple relationship with your private-sector partners that is beyond production only. Extensive experience is required in product marketing and expertise.ReferencesAustin, J. R., Siguaw, J. A., & Mattila, A. S. (2003). What this implies is the fact that these potential employees are asked for certain questions which suggest for their motivation levels. If they are de-motivated then this is a good time to know why this is the case (Robbins et al., 2008). If they are encouraged properly, they shall find a way to get motivated because it is every organization’s priority number one. There cannot be any two opinions about new employees who should be motivated enough to run the reigns of an organization. When strong relations are built with employees, they bec ome motivated to carry out their respective tasks. If these relations turn into positive ones, there would be more delight amongst the employees and they will always appreciate the organization for all its efforts, endeavors and undertakings (Sirota et al., 2006). It will essentially stop de-motivating the employees who are proactively looking for a way through which they can learn new avenues and seek novel grounds as far as their working domains are concerned. Hence it is a good measure if the de-motivation comes to a halt immediately, whereby there is more room to grow and develop for the employees and workers to boost the business in the real sense of the word. Another way through which de-motivation can be avoided within employees is to set individual goals for them so that they achieve them without much difficulty. It makes their tasks cut out and they know exactly what is required of them from an organizational standpoint. When the employees have hard specific and achievable goals up their sleeves, they will always remains motivated enough to come back to work day in and day out. They will know exactly what is required of them and what resources they must employ to attain their respective results (Sirota et al., 2006). This is a very significant aspect of learning new methodologies while remaining motivated all this while. What is even more necessary is the fact that employees must always know that whatever they are trying their hands at is achievable right from the outset. This shall shape up their actions and tell them exactly how they are going along with their respective work domains (Robbins et al., 2008). If they believe they cannot achieve these tasks, then there is bound to be more de-motivated existent within their ranks. Providing feedback on employees’ performance is one of the few ways through which their work regimes get measured. This could either be done in an annual feedback session or through semi-annual programs (Robbins et al., 2008). The need is to tell the employees exactly where they stand and what more they can do in the future. It shall always motivate the employees because their respective domains mean that the business will start to prosper (Sirota et al., 2

Analysis of Slavery and the Genesis of American Race Prejudice Article Essay

Analysis of Slavery and the Genesis of American Race Prejudice Article - Essay Example Degler states that, â€Å"†¦ the status of the Negro in the English colonies was worked out in a framework of discrimination; that from the outset, as far as the available evidence tells us, the negro was treated inferior to the white man’s servant of the free man† (Degler 52). Degler in this statement puts a halt to the discussion on what came first between slavery and discrimination and asserts that slavery evolved from the continued discrimination of the Negro by the white man, partly because there were no structures to protect Negros in America. Consequently, slavery evolved as a legal status and an epitome to discrimination. Degler seeks to differentiate the difference in the treatment of Negros in the Spanish and Portuguese Iberian region to that of the British. He explains that the major differences were that while the former had already fixed legal status to deal with the Negro even before they ventured into America, the same structures lacked in British te rritories. Secondly, Degler explains that â€Å"the discrimination against the negro antedated the legal status of slavery† (Degler 52). These were the main facts that differentiated British treatment of the Negros from the Spanish and the Portuguese. Degler in his argument makes a clear statement that slavery in the North American region left a considerably different mark on the status of Negros compared to the South American region, which according to Degler explains the current cases of racism in America. Degler asserts that as Handlin asserted, before the seventeenth century, the term slavery was not in use. However, Degler is fast to clarify that the fact that the discriminatory name did not exist does not indicate there was similar treatment between the Negro and the freeman.

Gene Manipulation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Gene Manipulation - Essay Example James Watson discovered the double helix structure of DNA. Due to which currently we have knowledge of our genes and thus makes it easier to manipulate them. Scientists already have made wonderful discoveries regarding how genes are related to diseases. Discovering the genes for cystic fibrosis as well as Huntington's disease are without a doubt important achievements, even though new treatments for both the disorders have not been discovered as yet. The discovery of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes of breast cancer were extraordinary accomplishments, even though they are responsible for less than 10 %of all kinds of breast cancer. Scientists will discover significant genetic associations with diseases in the next few years, some of which may eventuate in preventions or treatments that may reduce human suffering. whilst the identifying of for behavior genes are not quite understandable, there is little suspicion that scientific reports regarding new genetic tendencies or basis of behaviors will be a common occurrence in the up coming years . Furthermore, different kinds of genetic "alternative," from selection of sex to the traits of personalit y to better abilities might become obtainable by means of "gene therapy," which are also known as gene manipulation such as technologies or genetic reproductive or human cloning. This is only the beginning of the age of genetics. Genetic engineering means the human, and hence "artificial" (as in the sense of nature doesn't do this without our help), manipulation of genes. This may involve, as in the case of genetically modified foods, manipulating genes in individual organisms, one at a time. Of course, scientists do not sit there and place new genes by hand into every single potato. There are ways to do this in large batches at a time. But the expectation is that someday not too long from now we will place genes by hand, one at a time, into human fetuses or individual patients to correct deficiencies or replace "bad" genes that cause particular diseases. This sort of individual manipulation is what many people imagine when they hear the term genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is also commonly known as the manipulation of the gene pool, or the entire genes of every the individual in a population. New techniques have recently allowed fertility clinics to determine with a high statistical probability of success whether a fertilized egg is likely to be male or female. If a couple wants only females, perhaps because the parents carry genes that cause disease only in male offspring, then the clinic can pick out the females and implant only those in the mother. This is genetic engineering, the engineering of the genetic outcome of reproduction. Imagine that a clinic allows parents to choose the eggs or sperm that carry the "smartest" or "prettiest" or "strongest" genes and throw away the others. That is also genetic engineering. And it raises additional questions. What we tend to forget is that genetics is not everything. Genetics alone is not destiny, because development and the environment make a great difference in how genes are expressed. Parents of children with Down syndrome (also known as trisomy 21), for example, remind us that children with traits deemed to be a

Maxima And Minima Of Functions Mathematics Essay

Maxima And Minima Of Functions Mathematics Essay Maxima and Minima are important topics of maths Calculus. It is the approach for finding maximum or minimum value of any function or any event. It is practically very helpful as it helps in solving the complex problems of science and commerce. It can be with one variable of with more than one variable. These can be done with the help of simple geometry and math functions. Finding the maxima and minima, both absolute and relative, of various functions represents an important class of problems solvable by use of differential calculus. The theory behind finding maximum and minimum values of a function is based on the fact that the derivative of a function is equal to the slope of the tangent. Analytical definition A real-valued function f defined on a real line is said to have a local (or relative) maximum point at the point xà ¢Ã‹â€ -, if there exists some ÃŽÂ µ > 0 such that f(xà ¢Ã‹â€ -) à ¢Ã¢â‚¬ °Ã‚ ¥ f(x) when |x à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ xà ¢Ã‹â€ -| Restricted domains: There may be maxima and minima for a function whose domain does not include all real numbers. A real-valued function, whose domain is any set, can have a global maximum and minimum. There may also be local maxima and local minima points, but only at points of the domain set where the concept of neighbourhood is defined. A neighbourhood plays the role of the set of x such that |x à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ xà ¢Ã‹â€ -| A continuous (real-valued) function on a compact set always takes maximum and minimum values on that set. An important example is a function whose domain is a closed (and bounded) interval of real numbers (see the graph above). The neighbourhood requirement precludes a local maximum or minimum at an endpoint of an interval. However, an endpoint may still be a global maximum or minimum. Thus it is not always true, for finite domains, that a global maximum (minimum) must also be a local maximum (minimum). Finding Functional Maxima And Minima Finding global maxima and minima is the goal of optimization. If a function is continuous on a closed interval, then by the extreme value theorem global maxima and minima exist. Furthermore, a global maximum (or minimum) either must be a local maximum (or minimum) in the interior of the domain, or must lie on the boundary of the domain. So a method of finding a global maximum (or minimum) is to look at all the local maxima (or minima) in the interior, and also look at the maxima (or minima) of the points on the boundary; and take the biggest (or smallest) one. Local extrema can be found by Fermats theorem, which states that they must occur at critical points. One can distinguish whether a critical point is a local maximum or local minimum by using the first derivative test or second derivative test. For any function that is defined piecewise, one finds maxima (or minima) by finding the maximum (or minimum) of each piece separately; and then seeing which one is biggest (or smallest). Examples The function x2 has a unique global minimum at x = 0. The function x3 has no global minima or maxima. Although the first derivative (32) is 0 at x = 0, this is an inflection point. The function x-x has a unique global maximum over the positive real numbers at x = 1/e. The function x3/3 à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ x has first derivative x2 à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ 1 and second derivative 2x. Setting the first derivative to 0 and solving for x gives stationary points at à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢1 and +1. From the sign of the second derivative we can see that à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢1 is a local maximum and +1 is a local minimum. Note that this function has no global maximum or minimum. The function |x| has a global minimum at x = 0 that cannot be found by taking derivatives, because the derivative does not exist at x = 0. The function cos(x) has infinitely many global maxima at 0,  ±2à Ã¢â€š ¬,  ±4à Ã¢â€š ¬, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦, and infinitely many global minima at  ±Ãƒ Ã¢â€š ¬,  ±3à Ã¢â€š ¬, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. The function 2 cos(x) à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ x has infinitely many local maxima and minima, but no global maximum or minimum. The function cos(3à Ã¢â€š ¬x)/x with 0.1  Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬ °Ã‚ ¤Ã‚  x  Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬ °Ã‚ ¤Ã‚  1.1 has a global maximum at x  = 0.1 (a boundary), a global minimum near x  = 0.3, a local maximum near x  = 0.6, and a local minimum near x  = 1.0. (See figure at top of page.) The function x3 + 32 à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ 2x + 1 defined over the closed interval (segment) [à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢4,2] has two extrema: one local maximum at x = à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢1à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Ãƒ ¢Ã‹â€ Ã… ¡15à ¢Ã‚ Ã¢â‚¬Å¾3, one local minimum at x = à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢1+à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã… ¡15à ¢Ã‚ Ã¢â‚¬Å¾3, a global maximum at x = 2 and a global minimum at x = à ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢4. Functions of more than one variable  For functions of more than one variable, similar conditions apply. For example, in the (enlargeable) figure at the right, the necessary conditions for a local maximum are similar to those of a function with only one variable. The first partial derivatives as to z (the variable to be maximized) are zero at the maximum (the glowing dot on top in the figure). The second partial derivatives are negative. These are only necessary, not sufficient, conditions for a local maximum because of the possibility of a saddle point. For use of these conditions to solve for a maximum, the function z must also be differentiable throughout. The second partial derivative test can help classify the point as a relative maximum or relative minimum. In contrast, there are substantial differences between functions of one variable and functions of more than one variable in the identification of global extrema. For example, if a differentiable function f defined on the real line has a single critical point, which is a local minimum, then it is also a global minimum (use the intermediate value theorem and Rolles Theorem to prove this by reduction ad absurdum). In two and more dimensions, this argument fails, as the function shows. Its only critical point is at (0,0), which is a local minimum with Æ’(0,0)  =  0. However, it cannot be a global one, because Æ’(4,1)  =  Ãƒ ¢Ã‹â€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢11. The global maximum is the point at the top In relation to sets Maxima and minima are more generally defined for sets. In general, if an ordered set S has a greatest element m, m is a maximal element. Furthermore, if S is a subset of an ordered set T and m is the greatest element of S with respect to order induced by T, m is a least upper bound of S in T. The similar result holds for least element, minimal element and greatest lower bound. In the case of a general partial order, the least element (smaller than all other) should not be confused with a minimal element (nothing is smaller). Likewise, a greatest element of a partially ordered set (poset) is an upper bound of the set which is contained within the set, whereas a maximal element m of a poset A is an element of A such that if m à ¢Ã¢â‚¬ °Ã‚ ¤ b (for any b in A) then m = b. Any least element or greatest element of a poset is unique, but a poset can have several minimal or maximal elements. If a poset has more than one maximal element, then these elements will not be mutually comparable. In a totally ordered set, or chain, all elements are mutually comparable, so such a set can have at most one minimal element and at most one maximal element. Then, due to mutual comparability, the minimal element will also be the least element and the maximal element will also be the greatest element. Thus in a totally ordered set we can simply use the terms minimum and maximum. If a chain is finite then it will always have a maximum and a minimum. If a chain is infinite then it need not have a maximum or a minimum. For example, the set of natural numbers has no maximum, though it has a minimum. If an infinite chain S is bounded, then the closure Cl(S) of the set occasionally has a minimum and a maximum, in such case they are called the greatest lower bound and the least upper bound of the set S, respectively. The diagram below shows part of a function y = f(x). The Point A is a local maximum and the Point B is a local minimum. At each of these points the tangent to the curve is parallel to the x-axis so the derivative of the function is zero. Both of these points are therefore stationary points of the function. The term local is used since these points are the maximum and minimum in this particular region. There may be others outside this region. function f(x) is said to have a local maximum at x = a, if $ is a neighbourhood I of a, such that f(a) f(x) for all x I. The number f(a) is called the local maximum of f(x). The point a is called the point of maxima. Note that when a is the point of local maxima, f(x) is increasing for all values of x a in the given interval. At x = a, the function ceases to increase. A function f(x) is said to have a local minimum at x = a, if $ is a neighbourhood I of a, such that f(a) f(x) for all x I Here, f(a) is called the local minimum of f(x). The point a is called the point of minima. Note that, when a is a point of local minimum f (x) is decreasing for all x a in the given interval. At x = a, the function ceases to decrease. If f(a) is either a maximum value or a minimum value of f in an interval I, then f is said to have an extreme value in I and the point a is called the extreme point. Monotonic Function maxima and minima A function is said to be monotonic if it is either increasing or decreasing but not both in a given interval. Consider the function The given function is increasing function on R. Therefore it is a monotonic function in [0,1]. It has its minimum value at x = 0 which is equal to f (0) =1, has a maximum value at x = 1, which is equal to f (1) = 4. Here we state a more general result that, Every monotonic function assumes its maximum or minimum values at the end points of its domain of definition. Note that every continuous function on a closed interval has a maximum and a minimum value. Theorem on First Derivative Test (First Derivative Test) Let f (x) be a real valued differentiable function. Let a be a point on an interval I such that f (a) = 0. (a) a is a local maxima of the function f (x) if i) f (a) = 0 ii) f(x) changes sign from positive to negative as x increases through a. That is, f (x) > 0 for x f (x) a (b) a is a point of local minima of the function f (x) if i) f (a) = 0 ii) f(x) changes sign from negative to positive as x increases through a. That is, f (x) f (x) > 0 for x > a Working Rule for Finding Extremum Values Using First Derivative Test Let f (x) be the real valued differentiable function. Step 1: Find f (x) Step 2: Solve f (x) = 0 to get the critical values for f (x). Let these values be a, b, c. These are the points of maxima or minima. Arrange these values in ascending order. Step 3: Check the sign of f'(x) in the immediate neighbourhood of each critical value. Step 4: Let us take the critical value x= a. Find the sign of f (x) for values of x slightly less than a and for values slightly greater than a. (i) If the sign of f (x) changes from positive to negative as x increases through a, then f (a) is a local maximum value. (ii) If the sign of f (x) changes from negative to positive as x increases through a, then f (a) is local minimum value. (iii) If the sign of f (x) does not change as x increases through a, then f (a) is neither a local maximum value not a minimum value. In this case x = a is called a point of inflection. Maxima and Minima Example Find the local maxima or local minima, if any, for the following function using first derivative test f (x) = x3 62 + 9x + 15 Solution to Maxima and Minima Example f (x) = x3 62 + 9x + 15 f (x) = 32 -12x + 9 = 3(x2- 4x + 3) = 3 (x 1) (x 3) Thus x = 1 and x = 3 are the only points which could be the points of local maxima or local minima. Let us examine for x=1 When x f (x) = 3 (x 1) (x 3) = (+ ve) (- ve) (- ve) = + ve When x >1 (slightly greater than 1) f (x) = 3 (x -1) (x 3) = (+ ve) (+ ve) (- ve) = ve The sign of f (x) changes from +ve to -ve as x increases through 1. x = 1 is a point of local maxima and f (1) = 13 6 (1)2 + 9 (1) +15 = 1- 6 + 9 + 15 =19 is local maximum value. Similarly, it can be examined that f (x) changes its sign from negative to positive as x increases through the point x = 3. x = 3 is a point of minima and the minimum value is f (3) = (3)3- 6 (3)2+ 9(3) + 15 = 15 Theorem on Second Derivative Test Let f be a differentiable function on an interval I and let a I. Let f (a) be continuous at a. Then i) a is a point of local maxima if f (a) = 0 and f (a) ii) a is a point of local minima if f (a) = 0 and f (a) > 0 iii) The test fails if f (a) = 0 and f (a) = 0. In this case we have to go back to the first derivative test to find whether a is a point of maxima, minima or a point of inflexion. Working Rule to Determine the Local Extremum Using Second Derivative Test Step 1 For a differentiable function f (x), find f (x). Equate it to zero. Solve the equation f (x) = 0 to get the Critical values of f (x). Step 2 For a particular Critical value x = a, find f (a) (i) If f (a) (ii) If f (a) > 0 then f (x) has a local minima at x = a and f (a) is the minimum value. (iii) If f (a) = 0 or , the test fails and the first derivative test has to be applied to study the nature of f(a). Example on Local Maxima and Minima Find the local maxima and local minima of the function f (x) = 23 212 +36x 20. Find also the local maximum and local minimum values. Solution: f (x) = 62 42x + 36 f (x) = 0 x = 1 and x = 6 are the critical values f (x) =12x 42 If x =1, f (1) =12 42 = 30 x =1 is a point of local maxima of f (x). Maximum value = 2(1)3 21(1)2 + 36(1) 20 = -3 If x = 6, f (6) = 72 42 = 30 > 0 x = 6 is a point of local minima of f (x) Minimum value = 2(6)3 21 (6)2 + 36 (6)- 20 = -128 Absolute Maximum and Absolute Minimum Value of a Function Let f (x) be a real valued function with its domain D. (i) f(x) is said to have absolute maximum value at x = a if f(a)  ³ f(x) for all x ÃŽ D. (ii) f(x) is said to have absolute minimum value at x = a if f(a)  £ f(x) for all x ÃŽ D. The following points are to be noted carefully with the help of the diagram. Let y = f (x) be the function defined on (a, b) in the graph. (i) f (x) has local maximum values at x = a1, a3, a5, a7 (ii) f (x) has local minimum values at x = a2, a4, a6, a8 (iii) Note that, between two local maximum values, there is a local minimum value and vice versa. (iv) The absolute maximum value of the function is f(a7)and absolute minimum value is f(a). (v) A local minimum value may be greater than a local maximum value. Clearly local minimum at a6 is greater than the local maximum at a1. Theorem on Absolute Maximum and Minimum Value Let f be a continuous function on an interval I = [a, b]. Then, f has the absolute maximum value and f attains it at least once in I. Also, f has the absolute minimum value and attains it at least once in I. Theorem on Interior point in Maxima and Minima Let f be a differentiable function on I and let x0 be any interior point of I. Then (a) If f attains its absolute maximum value at x0, then f (x0)= 0 (b) If f attains its absolute minimum value at x0, then f (x0) = 0. In view of the above theorems, we state the following rule for finding the absolute maximum or absolute minimum values of a function in a given interval. Step 1: Find all the points where f takes the value zero. Step 2: Take the end points of the interval. Step 3: At all the points calculate the values of f. Step 4: Take the maximum and minimum values of f out of the values calculated in step 3. These will be the absolute maximum or absolute minimum values. Real life Problem Solving With Maxima And Minima For a belt drive the power transmitted is a function of the speed of the belt, the law being P(v) = Tv av3 where T is the tension in the belt and a some constant. Find the maximum power if T = 600, a = 2 and v 12. Is the answer different if the maximum speed is 8? Solution First find the critical points. P = 600v 2v3 And so = 600 6v2 This is zero when v =  ±10. Commonsense tells us that v 0, and so we can forget about the critical point at -10. So we have just the one relevant critical point to worry about, the one at x = 10. The two endpoints are v = 0 and v = 12. We dont hold out a lot of hope for v = 0, since this would indicate that the machine was switched off, but we calculate it anyway. Next calculate P for each of these values and see which is the largest. P(0) = 0  ,  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  P(10) = 6000 2000 = 4000  ,  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  P(12) = 7200 3456 = 3744 So the maximum occurs at the critical point and is 4000. When the range is reduced so that the maximum value of v is down to 8, neither of the critical points is in range. That being the case, we just have the endpoints to worry about. The maximum this time is P(8) = 4800 1024 = 3776. A box of maximum volume is to be made from a sheet of card measuring 16 inches by 10. It is an open box and the method of construction is to cut a square from each corner and then fold. Solution Let x be the side of the square which is cut from each corner. Then AB = 16 2x, CD = 10 2x and the volume, V, is given by V = (16 2x)(10 2x)x = 4x(8 x)(5 x) And so = 4(x3-132+40x) =4(32-26x+40) The critical points occur when 32 26x + 40 = 0 i.e.  when x =   = The commonsense restrictions are 5 x 0.So the only critical point in range is x = 2. Now calculate V for the critical point and the two endpoints. V(0) = 0  ,  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  V(2) = 144  ,  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  V(5) = 0 So the maximum value is 144, occurring when x = 2. Uses of Maxima and Minima in War. Concepts of maxima and minima can be used in war to predict most probably result of any event. It can be very helpful to all soldiers as it help to save time. Maximum damage with minimum armor can be predicted via these functions. It can be helpful in preventive actions for military. It is use dto calculate ammunition numbers, food requests, fuel consumption, parts ordering, and other logical operations. It is also helpful in finding daily expenditure on war.

Anorexia and Bulimia - A Threat to Society Essay -- essays research p

In a society that discriminates against people, particularly women, who do not look slender, many people find they cannot - or think they cannot - meet society's standards through normal, healthy eating habits and often fall victim to eating disorders. Bulimia Nervosa, an example of an eating disorder that is characterized by a cycle of binge eating and purging, has become very common in our society. Although it generally affects women, men too are now coming to clinics with this kind of disease. This is not a new disorder. It can be brought on by a complex interplay of factors, which may include emotional, and personality disorders, family pressures, a possible genetic or biologic susceptibility, and a culture in which there is an overabundance of food and an obsession with thinness. Common signs of this problem are pre-occupation with the body, a need for control and perfection, difficult interpersonal relationships, and a low self-esteem. It seems that irrespective of the initial triggers, bulimia can become a rigid pattern, which is difficult to change. The purpose of this paper is to reason out why bulimia is detrimental to our society. It focuses on its bad effect to the health of an individual and to the society. Perhaps you do not have this kind of eating disorder but you are definitely affected by it. Bulimia nervosa is a serious, potentially life-threatening eating disorder characterized by a secretive cycle of bingeing and purging. Binge eating is the uncontrolled consumption of large amounts of food lasting a few minutes to several hours. Purging or ridding the body of food eaten during a binge through self-induced vomiting, laxatives, fasting, severe diets, or vigorous exercise follows this. The cause of bulimia is really unknown. It may develop due to a combination of emotional, physical, and social triggers. The precise reasons for developing it are probably different for each person. Bulimia is more common in western societies, and some people link them to media images of thinness. Being thin is often linked to being successful. Bulimia may occur in several family members. People who have a mother or sister with an eating disorder are more likely to develop one, although it is not clear whether this is due to genetic factors or the learning of certain behaviors. Bulimia ner vosa can be extremely harmful to the body. The recurrent binge-and-pu... ...bulimia is and encourage them to fight this kind of disorder. If we will not work it out, this can influence more people leading to a malfunction society because we all know that bulimia is actually detrimental to our society. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Bulimia nervosa. 7 C’s of Effective Business Communication

7 C’s Of Effective Business Communication PRINCIPLE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION – 7C’S To compose effective written or oral messages, you must apply certain communication principles. These principles provide guideline for choice of content and style of presentation, adapted to the purpose and receiver of your message.
