I pulled one at random and saw that it did indeed have a job order. There was a description of the item, client information, job status, and a picture of the finished product. Unfortunately, having all this information meant little to me. I had no idea what name had been used for the seal-or if Mary was even the one who had made it. Frustrated, I opened the next drawer and found financial records, like bills and bank statements. I also located folders labeled â€Å"work logs† categorized by month. I eagerly pulled out this month’s and discovered a simple list of dates, client names, and brief descriptions of products. All-except for the three most recent ones-had check marks beside them. Finished products, presumably. I scanned the dates before Jerome’s disappearance, cross-checking against the descriptions. Green Tara statue . Bracelet . Athame . Three invoices in the last two weeks caught my attention: round pendant, talisman, medallion . I recognized none of the client names, but the culprit could no doubt have used an alias. Returning to the second drawer, I found each client’s file. The pendant was the right size and shape, but it had a hole drilled in it for a chain or string. I couldn’t say why, but something told me the seal’s original form would be whole. The talisman turned out to be the wrong shape. It was thick and oblong, more like a stone someone would keep in their pocket for good luck. I was starting to panic now. This was taking too long, and I couldn’t hear Mary anymore. God, espionage had been so much easier when I could turn invisible. With shaking hands, I pulled out the last file-the medallion. The client was Sam Markowitz, and he’d picked it up four days ago. The photo depicted a flat, quarter-sized disc made of smoky quartz with symbols I didn’t recognize etched onto it. Was that it? It was the closest I had to a match of Carter’s description. There could be other matches-items ordered months ago-but I didn’t have time to go through any more files. I shoved the medallion photo into my purse, closed the drawer, and hurried back out to the hall, half expecting to find Mary blocking my path. I had no need to worry, though. She had never left Seth’s side-literally. She now sat in my spot, pressing Seth between her and the couch’s arm. Two stacks of books were on the coffee table, and an open one was on his lap. He finished signing it and glanced up at my entrance with a relieved look. â€Å"But you see,† Mary was saying, â€Å"until O’Neill is able to confront the darkness within himself, he’ll never be able to open himself to Cady. He’s had his moments of vulnerability, of course-like the cave scene in Dominant Eclipse -but he’s still keeping his armor up-just like on the veranda in Memories of Man -and so it’s no wonder-â€Å" â€Å"Hey,† I said cheerfully. â€Å"We should probably get going.† Seth shot up from his seat, looking rather like a trapped animal who had just gnawed its own leg off and was about to run free. â€Å"Yes. I handed it to Seth. â€Å"This is it?† he asked. â€Å"I’m not certain. It’s close to the description, but I don’t know enough about this to really say.† â€Å"Hmm.† Seth studied it and then slipped it back into my purse. We rode for a few more minutes in silence until I finally asked, â€Å"I was never that bad of a fan, was I? That crazy?† â€Å"Oh, God, no,† he said. â€Å"Absolutely not. You were charming and cute and-† He abruptly cut himself off, but those words hung in the air between us. â€Å"You-you weren’t like that. Nothing like that,† he managed at last. There was a husky tone to his voice, hinting of some emotion but refusing to reveal which one it was. I’d meant my comment to be light, just a way to keep the conversation going. However, like everything else lately, the words had ended up triggering far more meaning than I’d intended. I had a flashback to when Seth and I had first met, when I hadn’t even known who he was. I’d rattled off my feelings for my favorite author, little knowing I was actually talking to him. Unlike Mary, I hadn’t stalked him on the Internet and known what he looked like. Seth cleared his throat. â€Å"So†¦what will you do with the picture now?† I ran with his change in subject. â€Å"Get someone to identify it, I guess. Erik, maybe. Breaking up doesn’t mean you stop caring about someone.† â€Å"Yes, but it means you have to let them go.† I was so upset that I was on the verge of tears. â€Å"You can’t have it both ways. You can’t get rid of me and then try to pull me back†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"I never wanted to get rid of you.† I stared at him for several heavy moments and felt those traitorous tears brimming heavier and heavier in my eyes. â€Å"Then why did you do it?† After all that yelling, his voice sounded barely like a whisper. â€Å"Because†¦I wanted to save you.† â€Å"You can’t,† I murmured, swallowing the tears back with great effort. â€Å"You can’t keep saving me, can’t keep trying to. It’s too late.† â€Å"No,† he said. His heart was in his eyes, and it was ripping mine apart. â€Å"Not for you. Never.† I don’t know how it happened exactly, but suddenly we were kissing. His lips were just as I remembered, soft and powerful and wonderful. It wasn’t a chaste kiss, nor was it a ripping-off-each-other’s-clothes kiss. It was hungry and desperate, like we’d been struggling through a desert and only just now found the water we needed to survive. Best of all, it was just kissing. Just me and Seth. There was no life energy or succubus schemes involved. There was no need to back off for fear of what might happen. We could drink from each other without pulling back. Except, well, we did. We jerked apart, and I knew the shock on his face mirrored my own. What had we just done? Had we†¦had we really done it? It was a kiss. A real kiss. The kind of kiss we’d always wanted. The kiss we weren’t supposed to be having. I turned abruptly away, staring at the road ahead. I was frozen and numb†¦and yet, alive and filled with warmth. The world had been in that kiss. But I didn’t know how to react to it, didn’t know what I was supposed to do now. So, I did the most inane thing possible. I started the car. â€Å"We should get back,† I said. â€Å"Yeah,† he agreed, sounding as stunned as I felt. I dared a look out of my peripheral vision. His eyes were fixed straight ahead, his wonderful lips tightened in a line that somehow made them look strong and vulnerable at the same time. I wanted to lean over and kiss them again, to melt as I had moments ago and forget all about reason. I wanted that perfect feeling to last forever. Instead of dealing with what had just happened, however, I did the cowardly thing and stepped on the gas. We drove back to the city in miserable silence, neither of us mentioning the kiss but both of us thinking about it. I dropped him off at the bookstore and offered a polite thank-you for his help. He returned it equally politely-giving me one last pensive look-and then walked off toward his car. I watched him go, memorizing every line of his body and how he moved. Every emotion possible warred within me, and I had no idea which deserved to win. I was exhausted by the time I stepped into my apartment building. The day had been mentally and physically wearying, what with would-be rapists, larceny, and the kiss heard ’round the world. Later, I’d find someone to identify the photograph for me. For now, I just wanted to sprawl on the couch and watch TV, preferably TV that had nothing to do with the magical or paranormal-or any romantic tension. Unfortunately, the magical and paranormal was waiting for me. What’s Nanette doing here? That was my last coherent thought before I was thrown against the far side of my living room. I hit hard, my head cracking against the wall. I fell to the ground, my legs just barely possessing the reflexes to keep me from falling as black spots sparkled across my vision. Nanette faced me, terrible and beautiful in all her golden glory. She hadn’t laid a hand on me, but she didn’t need to, not with the power she wielded. â€Å"How dare you,† she hissed, eyes narrowed. â€Å"How dare you spread those kinds of rumors.† â€Å"What are you-ah!† I was shoved back to the wall again. The distance wasn’t nearly so far as before, but the force was so hard that the impact hurt just as much. More pain shot through my skull as I tried to make sense of all this. â€Å"I don’t know what you’re talking about!† I cried. Nanette stalked toward me, putting her face inches from mine. â€Å"Of course you do. You told Cedric that I was the one who’d summoned Jerome, that I was the one causing chaos in his territory.† â€Å"I didn’t,† I whimpered. â€Å"Not exactly. I just told him you’d met with Jerome.† She snarled and grabbed me by the front of my shirt, jerking me forward. â€Å"That was nothing. Nothing! But now others are suspicious.† â€Å"I just thought he should know and-â€Å" â€Å"Do you know what you may have done?† she screamed. â€Å"I was a candidate for this city! You may have ruined everything.† She threw me again, this time toward the corner my TV was in. Its sharp angles bit into me when I hit, and I crumpled to the floor. Instead-you’re lucky I’m in a good mood today.† Her â€Å"good mood† felt like a thousand whips hitting my back. Tiny lashes of power, sharp as razors and burning like flames, slammed into me. I screamed as they slashed at my skin, ripping it open. Some part of me thought that if I screamed loud enough, maybe a neighbor would hear me. It was a useless sentiment, though. She would have soundproofed this room much as the demons had at the Cellar. Besides, what could any mortal do against this? Again and again those invisible whips tore into me. Obviously, I couldn’t see what was happening, but in my mind’s eye, I imagined my flesh torn to ribbons, my entire back a horrible, bloody mess. I don’t know how many times those lashings repeated. They blurred together. I was fast approaching a point where the pain was so intense, so overwhelming that I almost couldn’t feel it. My vision was going black, my brain barely able to hold consciousness. When the beating finally stopped, I wondered if I was dead. The room was still and silent. Then, the invisible force lifted off my back. I tried to roll over but couldn’t. Nanette knelt down, her lips right against my ear. â€Å"Do not fuck with me,† she whispered. â€Å"You interfere again, and I will kill you.† She vanished. I was left alone, sobbing and bleeding. I tried to move again but still was unable to. What was I going to do? I couldn’t even call for help. Of course, it probably didn’t matter. The pain was so great that I was either going to die or pass out any minute now. Human devices might not kill me, but demonic ones could, regardless if I was in stasis. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I felt strong arms slide underneath me, gently lifting me in a way that kept my back up. I stifled a small cry. Even without my back being touched, the movement hit every other muscle and place on my body that Nanette had hurt. I opened my eyes, trying to see who was there, but my vision was swimming and rapidly darkening. â€Å"What†¦Ã¢â‚¬  was all I managed to get out. â€Å"Shh, love. It’s going to be okay. You’re going to be okay.† Those arms gently eased me onto my bed. I moaned again as fire shot through my ribs. Cool hands smoothed back my hair, but I still couldn’t see anything. â€Å"I can’t heal you,† the voice said. â€Å"But I’ll get someone who can help. Just don’t move. It’s going to be okay.† There was something familiar about the voice, but I couldn’t identify it through the haze and confusion in my head. I could barely breathe, let alone think. Silence fell after that, as though my mysterious benefactor had left. Yet a few moments later, I blearily saw hands set Aubrey on the bed beside me. She leaned forward, sniffing my face. One of the friendly hands petted her head and back, in that way that could so often coax cats into lying down. It worked, and after turning in a couple of circles, she settled down beside me. PREFORMING OUR THEOLOGICAL TASK 1. Write an essay, which sets out as clearly as possible your present understanding of the Christian Church and the Christian faith and life. The Christian church has unique goals and purposes which, by definition, the world not committed to the Jesus, as savior does not honor or share. The church has been called to be a "people for God's own possession" (Ephesians 1:13-14, 18, 2:19-22) ? uniquely reflecting His character and striving to do those things in this world that are important to Him. It is by the deeds that we do that we bring glory to God. These deeds may not be extravagant or spectacular works in the sight of the world?they may involve a few people or may, but they are always redemptive in nature, helping others to understand God and to experience salvation through Jesus Christ. We who call ourselves Christians have a choice?a choice to have our lives defined by the calling to which we have been called or by some other calling. The danger today is that the choice is somewhat masked by other choices that also seem to be uniquely Christian. The politically correct academic world in which secular "political correctness" promotes an attitude of contempt for traditional Christian beliefs, the Christian churches attempts to bring all Christians into their particular fold, and the hyper-charismatic "renewal" movement?each with it's own separate agenda. Some offer the Christian church success in different but sometimes similar ways (by appealing to emotional satisfaction rather than sound doctrine and reason). Dr. C. Peter Wagner of Fuller Theological Seminary is very open about his belief that Christian theology is determined by experience. He endorses a "paradigm shift" in which Christians adapt a view of the world more in line with Eastern mysticism. It is the strength of each of the movements that should alert us that the convoluted thinking of our times leads us away from a true understanding of what God has given us in his written word. The church today is undergoing a major transition period, as churches strive to innovate a worship form more inclusive of GenXers and at the same time continue to attract the baby boomers. At the same time many congregations are suffering anxiety about change. This fear of change is probably the major impediment to effective ministry in Christianity in the United States today. Some of the mainline churches, in efforts to reach the unchurched, have de-emphasized biblical teaching and watered down their Christology to the point of not being able to have any significant influence on those who attend. A disciple of Jesus today must be determined to discover what it means to follow the calling of God in daily life. In this aspect we receive help from the Holy Spirit in learning from God's word, spiritual teachers and in the way we live our lives for God. The church today doesn't have to invent her mission today, but to serve the Lord and be faithful to the mission that has already been ordained by God. In order to correct the understanding of Christianity there has arisen a zeal for evangelism and missions. This, in part, arises from a faith that is sacred and compelling. We must remember however, that the object is not to place everything in the middle between two extremes, rather to keep everything in its own proper proportion. It may be seen from teachings of liberal Christians in the early 19th century that being "saved" or "becoming a Christian", in the liberal sense came to mean recognizing God's love for us or accepting God's assistance but not the salvation of a Holy God from the eternal consequences of sin through Jesus Christ. Many people today within the Christian community are determined to do what would have been unthinkable to earlier evangelical Christians?abandon traditional Christianity for "new Revelation". This would imply a church today that has forgotten the apostolic testimony, the apostolic teaching, the apostolic example, and the apostolic charge; a church that has lost faith in its message. Once Magwitch came to his home, he felt that he had to help him, even thought he might have been less gentlemanly. To Pip, this did not matter. He still decided to have him free from the police and then part ways from him. As Pip felt more affectionate to the convict, he decides that he has to escape with him, to help him with anything he would need. He spent all of his money on Magwitch and planned a boat escape. Herbert also receives a benefit from Pip. Pip feels that he has left Herbert in debt by spending money, and he plans to give him a job. CE vs. AD CE vs. AD CE vs. AD By Maeve Maddox A reader takes issue with my use of the designation CE instead of AD in this sentence: â€Å"A mix of these tribes migrated to England in the fifth and sixth centuries C.E.† Here is the reader’s reaction: Give me a break with the New Age (CE) crap.   You cant make-up words and slogans to change history or our calendar.   Its AD period. Clearly, the reader prefers the traditional Western designation of AD and BC to the equivalent CE and BCE to denote the eras demarcated by the birth of Christ. Contrary to the reader’s belief, the use of AD in lieu of CE to denote the Christian era is nothing so new as â€Å"New Age.† The term â€Å"New Age† refers to a movement of the 1970s that was characterized by alternative approaches to traditional Western culture. Environmentalism and an interest in spirituality and mysticism as opposed to organized religion are especially associated with the New Age phenomenon. The designation CE as an abbreviation for â€Å"Christian era† predates the New Age movement by about 300 years. According to The World Heritage Encyclopedia, â€Å"The expression Common Era can be found as early as 1708 in English.† Still earlier than that, another chronological term used by Christians was vulgaris aerae, â€Å"the common era.† (The adjective vulgar derives from the Latin noun vulgus, â€Å"the common people.†) This designation occurs in English as both â€Å"vulgar aera† and â€Å"vulgar era† and is abbreviated V.Ae. or V.E. However, AD/BC have been with us for a very long time, and the reader is not alone in feeling a strong repugnance toward the growing practice of replacing it with CE/BCE. At least one Christian governing body urges adherents to resist the CE/BCE notation, seeing it as a result of â€Å"secularization, anti-supernaturalism, religious pluralism, and political correctness.† On the other hand, many Christians support the change, in deference to non-Christian cultures that also employ the chronology. The abbreviations CE and BCE may be interpreted as any of the following phrases: Christian era, before Christian era common era, before common era current era, before current era I started using CE/BCE in my posts for Daily Writing Tips because we have an international audience and because I’ve become aware that more and more publishers are adopting these designations. For example, five books pulled from my shelves at random reflect the changing convention: AD/BC: Christianizing the Roman Empire, Yale University Press, 1984. AD/BC: A History of Private Life, Volume I, Harvard University Press, 1987. CE/BCE: The Encyclopedia of World History, Houghton-Mifflin, 2001. CE/BCE: Life After Death, Doubleday, 2004. CE/BCE: The Real Messiah, Watkins Publishing (London), 2009. For my part, if the World were to organize a vote on the matter, I’d vote to keep BC/AD- if only for the fact that it’s easier to tell which is which. When I read a book that uses the BCE/CE abbreviations, I have to slow down when I come to a date because the letters CE are in both designations. Any culture designing a chronology will choose a culturally significant event to mark â€Å"Year One.† Before the AD designation became common, Christians made use of the Hebrew Anno Mundi chronology, which began with the estimated date of Creation. It creates a psychological vacuum and raises serious problems of adaptability. There is a major problem in the lack of social support system or programmes both for the young migrants as well as their family members left behind. There is an urgency in addressing the issue of understanding how youth migration impacts parental needs family needs. The old feel neglected the young feel uncared for. The community feels betrayed. The society, over a period of time, forgets the young migrant who in their eyes has ceased to belong to them, at least socially psychologically. Due to lack of constant support, old parents other members of the family left behind by the young children became a socially psychologically vulnerable group with high risk of psychological behavioral disorders, including alienation feeling of isolation depression. While the benefits if International migration to individual migrants, their families, communities the nationalities are visible apparent, the visible invisible cost is an urgent area of concern. While international remittances have helped improve the quality of life of millions back home, sustained poor economics, improved the balance of payment situation contributed to foreign exchange reserves, the hidden cost visible cost can no longer be swept under the carpet. The socio-psychological impact on family members left behind, the flight of intellectual capital from developing to developed countries, issues of migrant integration, exploitation of cheap labor, lack of a policy of Inclusive development of migration pose serious challenges for our political business leaders policy planners. Protection of migrants, cases of racial abuses human rights violations call for a multidimensional approach to various aspects of International migration, particularly its linkages with development, Inclusive growth, human rights natural justice. With knowledge holding the key in a globalized economy, international migration of youth for better education better pay packet is going to be on the rise. In the Third world developing economies it has developed into a permanent integral structural part of the body politic economy. Lack of opportunities, disparity amongst economies within economies, divergent demographic dynamics, internal upheavals in home countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan Arab world have acted as a ‘push factor’ for international migration. Labor market imbalances, availability of cheap labor, both skilled unskilled from Asia-pacific countries, economic dependence inter-linkages amongst nations, rich poor and growing aspirations of the people I these countries have propelled migration of youth across boundaries. There has also been flow of expert labor from the Developed to developing countries, at times necessitated by transfer of technology, collaboration joint ventures projects or as strings attached to an economic or technological aid package. Both in the receiving sending countries, there is a growing realization amongst policy makers and think tanks that international migration development are interdependent interlinked. Since international migration is multidimensional, multicultural, multidisciplinary in character, we need to address the challenges in a more humane, understanding co-operative atmosphere. It requires integration cooperation at the local, regional transnational levels amongst governments, societies communities. There is a growing feeling that we can address the negative impacts of international migration maximize benefits to both the sending receiving countries by involving a collaboration well coordinated framework within the V. N. system. Such a framework should be well supported by Governments in both countries of origin countries of destination, backed by civil society. That way it can transcend cultural boundaries take into account factors like cultural accommodation integration, human rights, natural justice fair play. Countries in Asia Pacific region account for nearly 30%of world’s 200 million international migrants, majority of them youths, both as sending and receiving countries. Young talented, skilled youth from India, China, Phillipines etc. make their destination to US, Canada, Australia Europe for higher quality education as well as meeting the growing technological, semi-technological needs in these countries. Beside the labor market needs, family reunification account for major chunk of international migration. Besides transnational migration, inter-regional intra-regional migration is on the rise. You will find a large number of young engineers, doctors, construction workers, health workers from India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia Phillipines making their way to Gulf nations Australia. This fills up the labor gaps corrects labor imbalances in the region. The Gulf countries countries in South East Asia have emerged as temporary hub of labor migration from South Asia. Women construct laborers who got engaged in domestic sectors or in cleaning services construction activities often are lowly paid also explicated at the hands of middlemen service providers. There is a large number of illegal migrants who make their way to the Gulf countries. It is difficult to know the exact no. of such laborers since a sizable chunk do not register with national authorities. Besides, large no. of illegal migrants make their way because of porous geographic boundaries. For example, every year lakhs of Bangladeshis illegally enter India for better economic opportunities through the porous boundary. Similarly, there is free outflow of migrants within amongst the countries of erstwhile USSR. Because of the limited role played by Governments, these temporary migrants conduct labor get exploited at the hands of private recruitment agencies, particularly in the countries of South Asia. Labor trafficking, particularly construct laborers women laborers by private recruiting agencies using the means of deception is rampant in the Asia-Pacific region. The lack of a clear policy by the Governments in the region, rampant corruption by authorities and a pathetic attitude of authorities have altered the private players a field day in exploiting the young migrants, particularly women. The poor economic status of young men women makes them a vulnerable group. They get financially, physically sexually exploited at the hands of private players. In the name of migration, young women migrants, particularly from South Asia South East Asia get lured by the private players to the Gulf countries exploited, used abused in the process. These helpless young women are victims of sexual exploitation, forced marriages domestic slavery in the rich Gulf nations. In the name of Contract labor, there are a large number of repulsed cases of women being forced into prostitution or used as keeps in the Gulf countries. Since Islamic society does not provide them much protection, young women, particularly from South Asia S. E. Asia, are often lured into forced marriages or land up in brothels in Gulf countries. Countries like India have created a new department in Government for overseas Indians which addresses their concerns problems, both abroad at home. The Annual NRI meet organized by Government of India meeting specific communities like Gujaratis by Gujarat state Government is aimed at attracting involving the rich NRIs in profitable ventures at home. Some Governments have adopted a policy strategy of mobilizing the diaspora which helps in transfer of knowledge, skills, technology capital that makes up for flight of human capital from the home country. The key areas of action requires simplification of procedures for remittances so that illegal transfers are avoided. The understanding of the implications of gender dimensions of international migration, the concerns needs of the families of migrants left behind at home, preparing the second third generation migrants to take up the new challenges so that they don’t find isolated or disillusioned, taking care of the health educational eeds of the migrants their family members ensuring smooth integration of the emigrants in the country of destination are issues of urgent concern. The basic civil rights of the migrants needs to be looked into by the Governments civil society. The key areas of action co-operation for broadening the opportunities of young migrants requires their psychological, social economic integration in the process of development both in the receiving sending country. In order to fully understand utilize the potentials benefits of international migration, both the countries of origin destination need to evolve suitable migration management policies taking care of welfare of migrants their integration into the socio-economic agenda, poverty amelioration strategy in the sending countries, racial social integration in the receiving countries. National regional developmental goals should be reflected in the migration policies. There must also be policy coherence at the national, regional international levels. The civil legal rights of the migrants must be ensured at all costs. The Governments, in both sending receiving countries, must put in place mechanisms to eradicate human trafficking, regulate modus operendii of private recruitment agency, eliminate flesh trade in cases of young women migrants. Last but not the least, the national governments civil society, cutting across geographical boundaries, must work in an atmosphere of trust understanding so that international migration caters to the development needs maintain labor imbalances, thus contributing to the development of young migrants, their countries of origin countries of destination.
